The world is not the same as it was one year ago, let alone 10 years ago. This fact cannot be disputed and the resulting digital world in which our children exist is changing the way they think. Their brains are being altered by the audiovisual and interactive experiences provided by the digital tools they are exposed to from birth. Our children and our students are actually neurologically wired differently than our generation. Their cognitive structures process information in a parallel or simultaneous manner, not sequential like ours. As educators it is our responsibility to prepare students to succeed in this world as it is or as it will be, in their future.
Students are part of a 1:1 Program and they take part in a Digital Citizenship course throughout their time at the College. This aims to teach them the skills they need to access this technology appropriately and be critical and creative thinkers. This methodology is continued within each curriculum area under an integrated approach to the Australian Curriculum General Capabilities for ICT. Teachers are also encouraged to utilise a multimodal approach in their teaching to effectively model the skills needed to navigate our digital world and differentiate the curriculum.
The College believes that:
- Information Communication Technology (ICT) Literacy is important for learning today.
- students need to develop skills with ICT that are currently used in society.
- maximum access to computers and technology will empower the students to handle other technologies in the future.
- digital technologies have the potential to improve children’s learning in all areas of the curriculum and provide opportunities for creativity, innovation and differentiation.
